JOURNEY FOR KNOWLEDGE

A cornerstone of our educational approach is our Land-Based Training program, which serves as a powerful tool for education, healing, and truth and reconciliation for First Nations communities in North America.

The Land-Based Training program is multifaceted, offering a range of benefits:

Rekindling the Bond with the Land: The historical displacement of Indigenous communities from their ancestral territories has led to a profound disconnect from the land, a crucial element of their identity and culture. Our Land-Based Training program aims to bridge this gap, offering Indigenous youth the chance to interact with the land in meaningful ways, learn about traditional land stewardship, and reconnect with their cultural roots.

Reviving Indigenous Languages: The effects of colonization, including forced assimilation and residential schools, have put many Indigenous languages on the brink of extinction. Language is a vital part of cultural identity and a conduit for passing down knowledge and history. Our program incorporates language learning and revitalization initiatives, aiding in the preservation and strengthening of Indigenous languages.

Reclaiming Cultural Ceremonies and Songs: Cultural ceremonies and songs are essential for transmitting history, knowledge, and cultural values in Indigenous societies. These have often been suppressed or lost due to colonization. Our Land-Based Training program provides a platform for the relearning and practice of these significant cultural expressions, contributing to cultural revitalization and healing.

Restoring Traditional Food Systems: Traditional food systems, which are closely tied to the land, are a fundamental aspect of Indigenous cultures. These systems have been disrupted by colonization and the introduction of Western food systems. Our program includes modules on traditional food gathering, preparation, and preservation, aiding in the restoration of these traditional food systems and contributing to food sovereignty.

The "Four Pillars of Culture" as outlined by Weengushk likely encompass these four elements: connection to the land, language, cultural ceremony and song, and traditional food. By concentrating on these pillars, Weengushk and similar organizations aim to address the historical and ongoing impacts of colonization, promote healing and reconciliation, and contribute to the revitalization of Indigenous cultures.

Additionally, Laurentian University (LU) will recognize a maximum of 60 credits for students who have completed the equivalent of 60 credits at WFI. LU will consider the completion of the following WFI program combination:

Journey for Knowledge - Equivalent to 1 Academic Year (30 Credits)
